Clonmel Celtic ladies won the Tipperary Plate with a 4-2 win over Grannagh
Clonmel Celtic 4 Grannagh 2
Clonmel Celtic ladies won the Tipperary Plate in their debut year with a 4-2
victory over Grannagh. Celtic made a terrific start to this game and found
themselves 3-0 up after just 12 minutes. In the very first minute the
Grannagh keeper was unable to deal with Caoimhe Roche's teasing long ball
and Libby Toomey showed some neat ball control to fire Celtic into the lead.
Grannagh tried to hit back immediately but Deidre Sheehan repelled all their
early efforts with some fine clearances. Shortly after Ann Marie Browne shot
narrowly wide from Deidre Sheehan free kick, Celtic found themselves 2-0.
Once again an intelligent ball from Caiomhe Roche played Libby Toomey
through and she showed great composure to fire home. On 11 minutes after
good work in the box Louise Burke's cross fell invitingly to Ann Marie Brown
and she finished well to put Celtic into a commanding 3-0 lead. Credit to
Grannagh though as they kept their heads and fought their way back into the
game. They needed any early response to Celtic and they got a fine goal back
on 13 minutes. Grannagh were coming more and more into the game and on 20
minutes a dangerous inswinging corner was expertly tipped away by Ann Marie
Fitzpatrick in the Celtic goal.On 32 minutes a Grannagh free kick was inches
wide and couple of minutes later following a scramble in the Celtic
goalmouth the commanding Deidre Sheehan was on hand again to clear the
danger. Grannagh started the second half strongly again and came close on a
couple of occasions. However as the second half progressed Celtic began to
put some moves together as they went for the killer fourth goal. Libby
Toomey almost got her hat-trick on 54 minutes with a tremendous shot that
hit the crossbar and a couple of minutes later the keeper saved at her feet
after Ann Marie Browne played her through. Grannagh continued to be a threat
and Ann Marie Fitzpatrick was forced into a fine save on 68 minutes from a
free kick. On 72 minutes Celtic got the all important fourth goal when the
Grannagh keeper was unable to hold onto a Libby Toomey shot and Louise
Bourke was on hand to tap home the rebound to seal the game for Celtic.
Grannagh got a late consolation goal that their efforts deserved on 85
minutes to make the final score 4-2 to Celtic. Well done to Willie Burke and
congratulations to all the Celtic girls who have won a welcome bit of
silverware for the club. After a poor start to the season the team has
really improved and they got their just rewards last Sunday. On a day when
all 15 Celtic girls contributed to an excellent win Karen Morrissey got the
woman of the match reward. Without taken away one bit from Karen's prize I
have to say Deidre Sheehan was awesome at centre half for Celtic.
Team. (1) Ann Marie Fitzpatrick, (2) Ailish O'Hara, (3) Karen Morrissey,(4)
Deidre Sheehan, (5) Miriam Halley, (6) Liz Anne Donegan, (7) Caoimhe Roche,
(8) Sarah Lambe, (9) Ann Marie Browne, (10) Louise Bourke, (11) Libby
Toomey. Subs (12) Mary Egan,for L.Bourke 84 mins, (13) Emma Farrell for A.M
Browne 65 mins,(14) Doreen Melbourne for L.Donegan 72 mins and (15) Mary

Schoolboys
Defending champions Clonmel Celtic got their under 15 campaign off to a
perfect start with a 3-0 win away to Mullinahone. Celtic struggled a bit in
the first half until a Paul Landers goal seemed to settle them as they went
in 1-0 up at the break. Celtic were much better in the second period and
goals from Emmet Johnson and Gary Doyle saw them cruise to a comfortable 3-0
opening day win. David Peters and Jockie Landers saw enough in this
performance to suggest that this team could be battling again for honours
this season.

Who are Newtown Celtic?
Unfortunately, despite enquiries, I haven't been able to find out much about
this outfit. Apparently Newtown is about 10 miles north of Nenagh so we can
be grateful for the home tie. They play in the first division of the North
Tipperary League and they don't have any real form in either the Munster or
FAI Junior Cups. I have been informed that the standard of first division
football in North Tipp would be comparable to the second division here in
South Tipperary. Last season Celtic knocked out Nenagh Town and Cloughjordan
from North Tipp's Premier League in the FAI Junior Cup, though both were
tough encounters. Reaching the 6th round of this competition in our debut
year last season wasn't at all bad although our eventual exit to Carndonagh
was a disappointment ( we should have taken them). On paper we should win
this game. We're at home to a team from North Tipp's first division and we
are beginning to show a bit of form. A word of caution. This is a once off
cup game and Newtown will be up for it. And remember in the Tipperary Cup
last season a team from a lower division ,Glengoole, came to Clonmel and got
a 0-0 draw. Lets hope Willie's good start continues on Sunday.

Wack breaks Celtic goalscoring record
Paddy 'Wack' O'Donnell broke two Clonmel Celtic records in our 6-0 win over
Rosegreen Rangers last Sunday. The four goals he scored is the most any
Celtic player scored in a single match, the previous holder being Stephen
Ryan with 3 against Cullen Lattin last season. The 'Wack' is now Celtic's
all time leading scorer with 15 goals to date, overtaking Barry Walsh who
had 11. Paddy also is Celtic's all time leading scorer at youth level with
18 goals. By scoring 6 last Sunday Celtic equalled their previous record of
most goals in single game having also scored 6 against Cullen Lattin and
Bansha Celtic last season.

Willie Murphy takes over as new Clonmel Celtic manager
The club are pleased to announce that Willie Murphy has taken charge of
Clonmel Celtic's first team. Indeed his arrival had an immediate positive
effect as his first game in charge saw Celtic end their recent miserable run
by winning away to Peake Villa last Sunday. Its understandable when Willie
says his immediate objective is to drag Celtic away from the bottom of the
table and hopefully once in a safe position we can kick on from there.
Willie, who is from Cahir, had a very successful playing career, winning
numerous league and cup medals with St Michaels. With St Michaels he also
won Munster Youth and Junior Cups. He played with Clonmel Town for a year
where he added another league medal to his collection. He also played with
his home town club Cahir Park where he ventured into management for the
first time. As manager he guided Cahir Park to the 1st Division title and
Shield and he also reached a Tipperary Cup final. Based on his impressive
introduction to management Willie was given the prestigious position of
manager of the Oscar Traynor TS&DL interleague side. His most recent role as
manager saw him spend a season with St Kieran's in Division 4 last season.
Willie has already created a good atmosphere at training and it is clear the
players are willing to work hard for him. Everyone at the club would like to
wish Willie the best of luck with his new position.

It is good to see Eddie Doyle and Kevin Kennedy back training. Both of these
players have been out for close to a year with injuries and with a bit of
luck they should be back in action in 2/3 weeks. The club has also signed
goalkeeper Peter O'Sullivan. Peter has loads of experience in junior
football and will be a valuable addition to the squad.

Ladies
The ladies continued their good run with a 3-0 victory over Granard last
Wednesday. Despite the scoreline Celtic had to battle hard for this result.
Granard probably had the better of the opening period and when you need
someone to ease the pressure who better to call on that Libby Toomey who
scored just before half time to give Celtic a 1-0 interval lead. Before
Granard could get back into the game Libby scored two more early in the
second half to kill off the tie. Hat trick hero Libby Toomey was not the
only one who impressed on the night. The centre half pairing of Deidre
Sheehan and Miriam Halley were towers of strength while Louise Bourke had a
magnificent game. In goal Anne Marie Fitzpatrick gave an assured and
faultless display. The ladies have their biggest game of the season on
Sunday week when they meet Granard in the Shield final. Despite this
scoreline, Granard will a very difficult team to beat so we hope as many
people as possible will travel to Clerihan on Sunday 18th to support the
girls. The game has a 2.30pm kick off.
