Clonmel Celtics Latest News

TOPIC: Big derby test for Celtic

Celtic go into Sunday's clash with Town badly need of points to kick start their season. To be honest Celtic's record against Town is brutal to say the least. Not alone have we failed to beat them in 5 attempts ( 4 defeats and 1 draw) we have yet to score against them. Sunday would be he perfect day to put things right.

TOPIC: Defensive errors costly for Celtic

Clonmel Celtic's poor start to the season continued as they went down 3-2 to Borris last Wednesday. Celtic will be all the more disappointed as they were well on top for most of the game. The game was tied at 2-2 at he break with an og and Stephen Ryan on the mark for Celtic. This was an improved performance from Celtic but they simply cannot afford to continue making the defensive errors they are making at the moment. Hopefully they can sort it out for the visit of Peake Villa to Clonmel this Sunday.

TOPIC: Celtic still await first win

A late goal from Eddie Doyle earned Clonmel Celtic a point in a 3-3 draw away to newly promoted Bansha Celtic last Sunday. Two goals from Paddy O'Donnell had Celtic 2-1 up at the break but in the end they had to settle or a point. One point from six does not represent a good start to the season and that first win cannot come soon enough. (Match Report will appear in Reports Section.)

DATE: 19-08-05

The club would like to thank David Moore and Kate Ryans for their generous of our new away jersey this season.

St Michaels collected a comfortable three points from their visit to Clonmel Celtic last Thursday with a 4-1 win. The reigning Munster champions were in control fom start to finish and lead 2-0 at the break. John Mullins briefly raised Celtic hopes with a goal 2 minutes into he second but Michaels soon resumed control and ran out easy 4-1 winners. Full report will appear in Reports Section. After the first round of matches Town and Michales are already clear at the top (see Tables Section) yawn, yawn! Hopefully Celtic can bounce back against newly promoted Bansha Celtic next Sunday.

TOPIC: Tough Start for Celtic

Clonmel Celtic kick off the new season this Thursday evening when they entertain Munster champions St Michaels. Everyone will remember he opening game last season when Celtic came back from a 2 goal deficit against St Michaels to win a thriller 3-2. Unfortunately we all know what happened afterwards as Celtic failed to capitalise on a good start to the season to eventually finish a disappointing sixth. With new manager Mick Dillon in charge Celtic will be hoping for a good start to the new campaign as they follow up the St Michaels encounter with a game away to newly promoted Bansha Celtic next Sunday. Four points would be the ideal return form these games and lets wish Mick and boys the best of luck this season. What would represent a good season? An improvement on last year would not be asking for an awful lot. So lets set the bar a bit higher. How about a top three finish in the league, a crack at the Tipperary Cup and a run in the Munster or FAI Junior Cup.

TOPIC: Dillon impresses at AGM

Clonmel Celtic had their AGM last Friday in Hearns Hotel. The highlight of the meeting was Mick Dillon's address to the gathering when he laid out his plans for the coming season. His main objective is to win a trophy for Clonmel Celtic. However this season is all about winning respect for the club and all the members who work hard at keeping things going. The level of indiscipline and abuse hurled at committee members by players last year will simply not be tolerated next season. Players who can't show respect to the people who voluntarily give up the little spare time they have can look for another club to play for. Also the day of playing for this club without making any financial contribution is gone. If you don't play your weekly club fee you don't play. Its as simple as that. Some juniors can learn a lesson or two from the schoolboys in this regard. You cannot help but being impressed by Mick Dillon's enthuasiasm for his new task as he marks an important stage in the developement of the club. This year it is not all about football. .

TOPIC: Nightmare weekend for 15s

In the space of 4 days Clonmel Celtic's league and cup dreams appear over. They lost a crucial league game 5-0 away to St Michaels last Thursday in a game where nothing went right for them. On Sunday they crashed out of the Tipperary Cup when they went down 4-1 to Clonmel Town. This was a cruel blow on a team who led the league from the very first few weeks of the season only to falter at the very end. Meanwhile the under 12's drew 1-1 with Clerihan with Stevie O'Keeffe on the mark for Celtic.

DATE: 21-04-05
TOPIC: Celtic lose final league game

Celtic lost their final game of the season going down 1-0 to Clonmel Town. This was a good performance from the lads and after conceeding an early penalty they fought back well and can consider themselves unlucky not to have grabbed a point.

DATE: 14-04-05
TOPIC: U/15's can take step towards title

The under 15s can take a huge step towards the league title if they can win away to St Michaels next Sunday. With St Michaels and Clonmel Town both suffering defeats in the last week Celtic's destiny is now in their own hands.

DATE: 14-04-05
TOPIC: Mixed weekend for B team

The B team's Tipperary Cup adventure came to an end last Sunday when they went down 4-1 to Premier side Killusty. Wayne Kiely who was outstanding on the day got Celtic's goal from the penalty spot. The general consensus was this was a fine display by Celtic who proved more than a match for Killusty. The good news is that Celtic retain their second division status after Cullen Lattin lost 1-0 to Gooldscross.

DATE: 05-04-05
TOPIC: Celtic suffer record defeat

Clonmel Celtic were no match for St Michaels last Sunday as they went down 5-0, their biggest defeat in their short history. The result puts St Michaels bang back into contention for the league title following Clonmel Town's defeat away to Peake Villa. Its really hotting up in the under 15 league. Celtic managed a creditable draw away to Clonmel Town (see Schoolboy reports section) which means 5 teams are still in with a chance of winning the league.

DATE: 31-03-05
TOPIC: Pressure off Celtic

For the first time in many weeks Celtic play a game where they are under no pressure to get points. Celtic travel to Tipperary on Sunday to play a St Michaels's side who need a win to boost their league challenge. Hopefully a more relaxed Celtic can finish the season as they started it i.e. unbeaten against Town and St Michaels. That would make up for all that went in between. Its a busy week for our scchoolboys with the under 11's and under 12's in action against Cahir Park. The big game this weekend is without a doubt the under 15's clash with Clonmel Town which takes place at 11am on Sunday morning.

DATE: 28-03-05
TOPIC: Under 12's out but under 15's advance

It was cup action this weekend for our schoolboys with mixed luck. Our under 12's went down 5-0 to Clonmel Town but our under 15s won 4-3 away to St Kevins with Emmet Johnson hitting a first half hat trick as the teams were tied 3-3 at the break. Glen Nugent scored the winning goal in the second half. Things are looking gloomy for the youths as they lost 5-3 to Galbally. with Emmet Johnson, Glen Nugent and Gino Lonergan on the mark for Celtic.

DATE: 22-03-05
TOPIC: B team dragged into relegation fight

Clonmel Celtic B lost their last game of the season going down 2-0 away to leaders Galbally Utd. A couple of weeks ago Celtic looked safe and for a while were on he edge of the promotion scene. Amazingly results over the last few weeks have now see Celtic in real danger of going down owing mainly to a fine run by Glen Villa. If Cullen Lattin win one of their last two games Celtic will go down.

DATE: 20-03-05
TOPIC: Paddy's Day

A brace of goals from Paddy O'Donnell kept Celtic in the Premier Division on St Patrick's Day. Celtic had to do it the hard way after going 1-0 down after two minutes to Peake Villa. However a marvellous equaliser from James Power and two goals from Paddy O'Donnell saw Celtic run out 3-1 winners. With Rock Rovers losing to Clonmel Town this result means Celtic are safe. Match report will appear in Reports Section.

DATE: 16-03-05
TOPIC: Victory should mean safety

Celtic face their most important game in their short history when they host Peake Villa on St Patrick's Day. Unless there is an unlikely set of results from other games Celtic will be safe if they win this game. There is a strong possibility that a draw could result in a relegation play off against Rosegreen. However despite losing 4-1 to Villa recently Celtic have it in them to win this game if they perform to their optimum. They know whats at stake so its up to them.

DATE: 16-03-05
TOPIC: Celtic B in cup semis

Congratulations to the B team for a tremendous 2-1 win away to Galbally last Sunday. One nil down with 10 minutes to go Celtic hit back with a goal from Spud Murphy that brought the game to extra time. Eoin Parker was the hero when he headed home a Wayne Gartland corner to clinch a semi final spot. What a great achievement. Celtic will be joined in the semis by St Michaels, Killusty and either Town or Vee Rovers.

DATE: 13-03-05
TOPIC: Relegation battle hots up

A battling performance from Clonmel Celtic saw them come from 2-1 down early in the second half against Rosegreen Rangers to win 4-2 and gain three vital points. Match Report will appear in Reports Section. However Rock Rovers victory over Peake Villa means that Celtic still need another 3 points to be safe.

DATE: 11-03-05
TOPIC: Big weekend for Junior teams

Clonmel Celtic B will be attempting to reach the semi final of the Tipperary Cup this weekend when they play away to Galbally. They will relish the title of underdogs going into this tie having already lost 4-0 to Galbally ealier this season. However it should also be noted that Celtic have beaten and drawn with the Limerick side in Clonmel already so they have every chance on Sunday. The A tream are running out of games and simply need three points against Rosegreen this Sunday. A draw will probably be enough for Rangers but will be no good for Celtic. A draw coupled with Rock Rovers winning will mean Celtic will need to pick up a point against Town or Michaels as well as beating Peake Villa to stay up. We don't want to be facing this prospect and although Rangers are a vastly improved side than the one Celtic beat 6-0 earlier in the season if Celtic can find their true form they should be good enough for three points on Sunday. The under 15s should collect all three points against Ballingarry on Saturday while the under 11s will be hoping to keep in contention by beating Clerihan.

DATE: 08-03-05
TOPIC: Borris safe? Bridge doomed?

Borris 's 6-0 win over the Bridge looks to have made them safe and condemned Bridge to first division football next year. Rosegreen edged closer to safety with what could prove to be an invaluable point against Killusty. At the moment its looks a relegation battle between Bridge, Celtic and Rock Rovers with Rosegreen not completely out of trouble yet. Next weekend's results will make things alot clearer with Celtic travelling to Rosegreen and Rock Rovers at home to Killusty.

DATE: 08-03-05

DATE: 24-02-05
TOPIC: Make or break for Celtic

Clonmel Celtic play Rock Rovers this weekend in a game they have to win if they want premier football next season. This will be a tough encounter but if Celtic cannot win at home against a team currently bottom it is hard to make a case for them to stay in the Premier League. A note of caution, Celtic's record against Rock Rovers is woeful as they have lost the three games they have played against them. So they have been warned. The B team have a home game in the league against Glen Villa. The under 11's are in cup action at home to St Michaels while the under 15s will be hoping to keep their good run going with victory away to Cahir Park.

TOPIC: Miserable weekend for Celtic

Clonmel Celtic were dumped out of the Tipperary Cup last Sunday going down 4-1 to Peake Villa in Thurles. Stephen Ryan scored a late consolation goal for Celtic. Celtic also find themselves in the precarious position of second from the bottom in the Premeir league after Rosegreen's victory over Borris. The B team however had an impressive 1-0 win against promotion chasing Glen goole with Wayne Kiely scoring a late winner.

DATE: 11-02-05
TOPIC: Tough cup challenge for Celtic

Clonmel Celtic will hope to join their B team in the last 16 of the Tipperary Cup on Sunday. To do so they will have to overcome Peake Villa in Thurles which will not be easy. Celtic have already won in Thurles in the league and victory on Sunday would be a great boost to he team. The youths face a must win game when they entertain Rock Rovers on Saturday. The B team play at home to Glengoole while the under 11's will try and avenge last week's defeat against St Kevins when they play them at home with top spot in the league being the prize on offer.

TOPIC: Bridge draw with Killusty

Its still very tight at the bottom following Old Bridge's 2-2 draw with Killusty last Sunday. Celtic will be concerned that Bridge have moved one point ahead of them but relieved that it is not a 3 point gap. Its still all to play for.

DATE: 04-02-05
TOPIC: Dressing Room Project stalled

There has been a delay in the start date to build our new dressing rooms. Originally planned for the 10th January this date was postponed. The Department of Sports Tourism and Arts require the club to prepare a Deed of Convenant before the grant will be paid. Our solicitor is in the process of preparing this and hopefully it will be sent to the Chief State Solicitors Office next wek. We will keep you updated.

DATE: 01-02-05
TOPIC: Very tight at the bottom

With one point separating the bottom four sides this season's relegation battle is turning out to be the tightest the TSDL has seen in years. Rocks Rovers win on Sunday has given them renewed hope as they are now on 11 points just one point behind Rosegreen, Old Bridge are ourselves who are on 12. At this stage Rovers and Rosegreen look in most trouble as they have fewer games left. Even Borris and Peake Villa can't count themselves safe on 15 points although Villa's games in hand should see them safe. For Celtic their last 5 games will be like cup finals and with Rock Rovers and Rosegreen to play these games could prove particularly decisive.

DATE: 30-01-05
TOPIC: Battling Celts denied vital points

A late equaliser denied Clonmel Celtic a deserved three points against neighbours Old Bridge. Trailing 1-0 at the break Celtic staged a great second half comeback and goals from Kevin Kennedy and Graham Doyle looked to half Celtic heading for three priceless points until Emmet Ryan scored with 3 minutes remaining. Match report will appear in Reports Section. Celtic youths stay rooted to the bottom after going down 2-0 to Clonmel Town. The under 11s unbeaten run has come to end as they lost 2-0 to St Kevins. Out of the Paddy Purtill Cup go the B team after a 2-0 defeat away to Vee Rovers. Finally some good news as the under 15s keep up their league challenge after winning 3-1 at St Kevins.

DATE: 27-01-05
TOPIC: Points vital for Celtic

Clonmel Celtic face a huge relegation battle this Sunday when they travel the short distance to play Old Bridge. Both clubs share the second relegation spot on 11 points so each will be desperate for a win on Sunday. Our youths play Clonmel Town on Saturday also in need of points to avoid the drop. Both our under 11's and under 15's travel to St Kevins on Saturday for important league games. Finally the B team hope to cause an upset when they travel to first division Vee Rovers in Round 1 of the Paddy Purtill Cup.

DATE: 25-01-05
TOPIC: Bridge draw level with Celtic

Clonmel Celtic now share the second relegation spot with the Old Bridge following the Bridge's 3-2 away to Rock Rovers last Sunday. Borris's draw at Killusty sees them edge further away from the drop zone. It's very tight at the bottom and Celtic's game with the Bridge next Sunday has now taken on huge significance for both clubs.

DATE: 25-01-05

Clonmel Celtic's game with St Michaels was called off last Sunday as the Cooke Park pitch was unplayable. The under 15s clash with Clonmel Town as well as the under 11's game with St Kevins also fell victim o the wet weather.

DATE: 20-01-05
TOPIC: Tough cup draws for both junior teams

Clonmel Celtic have been drawn away to Peake Villa in the second round of the Tipperary Cup while the B team also missed out on a bye as they have to travel to first division Vee Rovers.

DATE: 20-01-05
TOPIC: Celtic in need of points

Celtic go to Cooke Park on Sunday desperate for points to drag them to safety. Celtic should be well capable of collecting the nine points which I reckon will keep them up. Anything gained against St Michaels though will be a bonus. Celtic's record against the Saints isn't bad with one win, one defeat and one draw in their three meetings to date so there is no reason Celtic cannot get something from Sunday's clash. In a change of fixture he U/15's face Clonmel Town and this will give a clearer picture of Celtic's championship credentials. They simply cannot afford to slip up again against Town having lost once already to them this season. The unbeaten under 11's have a top of the table clash against St Kevins on Saturday while the junior B team travel to play the Commons on Sunday.

DATE: 18-01-05

TOPIC: Burns hat trick sees Celtic through

A second half hat rick from Darren Burns helped Celtic to a comfortable 6-1 win over third division Clerihan in the first round of the Tipperary Cup. Match report will appear in Reports Section.

DATE: 13-01-05
TOPIC: Make or break game for youths

Clonmel Celtic youths face a crucial relegation tussle on Saturday when they travel to Carrick to take on Rock Rovers. Victory here would lift Celtic above Rovers and leave them level on points with Galbally. However defeat would leave them with in a very precarious position with an uphill battle to avoid the drop. The A team would want to be wary of third division Clerihan when they travel to Clonmel for a first round Tipperary Cup game on Sunday. Schoolboy football also resumes with our under 15's in action against Clerihan while our under 12's will play Rock Rovers.

DATE: 11-01-05
TOPIC: Bad ref decision costs youths

Clonmel Celtic youths can consider themselves unfortunate not to get something from their clash with St Michaels last Saturday. A poor refereeing decision brought Michaels back into the game. Kevin McGrath put in a fine tackle to win the ball and only after winning the ball did he then make contact with the Michaels player, clearly not a penalty. However the referee saw otherwise and gave the leaders a penalty. St Michaels scored again shortly afterwards to win the game 2-1. There are enough games left for the youths to put some points on the board so lets hope their luck will change soon.

DATE: 09-01-05
TOPIC: Celtic exit Munster Junior Cup.

Two second half goals from Paul Scully and Ian Cleary put Clonmel Celtic out of the Munster Junior Cup. Full match report will appear in Reports Section. Better cup news for the B team as they advanced to the 2nd round of the Tipperary Cup after eventually getting the better of Mullinahone. The game ended 2-2 with Brian Lambe and Mick Kennedy getting the goals for Celtic and Celtic won the tie 3-2 on penalties. And despite a valiant effort the youths still await their first league win of the season after going down 2-1 to leaders St Michaels.

With heavy rain forecasted there is a possibilty that Sunday's game against Town will be played in Ferryhouse.

DATE: 07-01-05
TOPIC: Big derby test for Celtic

Clonmel Celtic will need to improve their miserable record against Clonmel Town next Sunday if they wish to advance in the Munster Junior Cup. Three defeats and one draw is all Celtic have to show for their efforts against the Town. In fact we have yet to score against them. We will undoubtedly be going into Sunday morning's game as underdogs but victory would be the perfect start to what will be an important year for the club. On Saturday in the youth league its top versus bottom as our youths try to register their first league win against leaders St Michaels.

DATE: 03-12-04
TOPIC: Mission Impossible?

Our only team in action this weekend are our junior B team as they face Galbally Utd in the second leg of the Shield. Trailing 4-0 from the first leg Celtic's chances of reaching the final look very slim. However two weeks ago they scored four times in ten minutes so a couple of early goals could make this an exciting tie. Realistically this is an opportunity to see how much Celtic have improved in recent weeks and whether they are strong enough to mount a promotion challenge as Galbally are a useful outfit and are currently top of division 2.

TOPIC: Celtic B climb to 3rd

After two successive wins Clonmel Celtic B have climbed to third place in the division 2 table. If Celtic can maintain their recent good form and put another few wins together the second half of the season could see them fighting for promotion rather than trying to avoid relegation. With over half of the Premier league gone at this stage it looks as if there will be five teams fighting to avoid the drop. Unfortunately it looks as if Celtic will be battling it out with Borris, Rosegreen, the Bridge and Rock Rovers to avoid relegation. However as long as the team remains positive and focussed we should pull clear.

TOPIC: Under 16's in National Cup Action

Our under 16's travel to Waterford to take on Waterford Bohemians in the National Cup this weekend. After beating Caim Utd of Wexford in the previous round this will be another tough challenge. Celtic fans will have happy memories of our last meeting with Bohemians when we beat them in 2003 in the Munster Youths Cup final. Lets hope our under 16s have the same success this weekend. At junior level our A and B team have very important games this weekend. Our A team are at home to Borris needing a win to avoid getting dragged into a relegation fight. Earlier this season we were very unlucky to lose 1-0 in Borris having passed them off the pitch. A repeat of that performance with a bit more penetration should be good enough to capture all three points on Sunday. After last week's superb comeback against Glen Villa Celtic B will be hoping to move further away from trouble when they host Kilsheelan Utd. After losing 5-0 away to Kilsheelan earlier this season Celtic will be looking for revenge.

Clonmel Celtic will hold our flag day this Saturday in Clonmel. We encourage everyone to support this important fund raising event.

TOPIC: Celtic drop a place

Clonmel Celtic dropped to 5th position in the league following Peake Villa's 2-0 victory over Old Bridge last Sunday. There are now only three points separating the bottom five teams thus emphasising how important Sunday's clash with Borris is. In division two Clonmel Celtic have climbed to 6th place and three points clear of the bottom after Sundays dramatic win against Glen Villa.

TOPIC: Important week for B team

The B team have two big games in the coming weeks that could make or break their season. At the moment they are sharing bottom spot on 4 points with Glen Villa and Kilsheelan Utd and they play both these teams in their next two games. On Sunday they travel to Glen Villa and you feel they will need to pick up at least 4 points from these two games. After picking up their first point of the season the youths face a stern test as they travel to Cashel Town on Saturday. At schoolboy level the under 11's will be hoping to maintain their 100% start to the season when they play at home to Cahir Park on Saturday morning. The under 15's are also in action on Saturday morning as they will be trying to maintain their title challenge against a Rock Rovers side that recently knocked them out of the National Cup.

TOPIC: Race Night

Clonmel Celtic will hold a race night on Saturday 4th December in Kate Ryans. As people will be aware the club was approved a Sports Capital Grant to build dressing rooms earlier in the year. As the grant does not cover the full cost of the building project it is necessary for the club to try and raise additional money. With this in mind we encourage people to support the event.

TOPIC: Adam McSherry wins international call up

Celtic youth and junior player Adam McSherry has received a call up to the Irish schools international team. At a recent inter provincial tournament where Munster finished second Adam impressed watching international manager John Proctor. He is now included in the final squad of 22 that will take part in an international tournament involving England, Wales and Scotland in the new year. At the tender age of 17 Adam has already caught the attention of alot of people with his footballing talents. After playing his early schoolball football with St Olivers, Adam then spent a couple of years in Dublin playing for Belvedere and Shelbourne. He has already been across the water where he has had trials with Manchester United and Middlesboro and he will soon be travelling to England again for more trials. Everyone at the club would like to congratulate Adam and we wish him every success in his future football career. Unfortunately Adam picked up an injury recently which makes him a doubtful starter for Celtic's Munster Junior Cup game against Vee Rovers this Sunday.

TOPIC: Murphy reflects on cup exit

Willie graciously congratulated Cormackstown on their victory last Sunday. He was impressed with their organisation and work rate. However he feels the poor attendances at training sessions over the last few weeks contributed to his own side's inept performance. Although we may have been missing a few players he believes the lack of bodies at training is was a major factor in recent poor displays by the team. What impressed Willie most when he took up his role was the players' positive attitude to training and he is most disheartened at the drop off in training over the last few weeks. Until things improve more results like last Sunday are inevitable. Who once said 'fail to prepare, prepare to fail'?

TOPIC: Sports Information Night

Clonmel Celtic participated in a 'Sports Information Night' which was held in the County Museum, Clonmel last Tuesday night ,9th November. The event was held as part of the 'Champion Kiely' exhibition, Ireland's first Olympic gold medal winner who hailed from Ballyneale , Carrick on Suir and won his medal at the St Louis Olympics USA in 1912. The club had a stand which was manned by Tess Kiely and John Power and they gave information leaflets on the club to interested members of the public. The event had 3 guest speakers on the night, two from the South Eastern Health Board who gave talks on health promotion and drugs awareness and substance abuse and the final speaker was Dr Gerry O'Sullivan who gave an interesting presentation on the management of sport injuries. Overall the well attended event was a success.

TOPIC: Tough FAI Youth Cup challenge for youths

Celtic are in action in the third round of the FAI Junior Cup this weekend as they entertain Cormackstown Rovers from North Tipperary's Premier League. This is the third time we have played opposition from North Tipperary in this season's Junior Cup competition. Cormackstown, which is near Holy Cross, were founded six years ago and compete in North Tipperary's Premier League. A couple of season's ago they finished runners up in the league which represents their best finish to date. After a bright start to this year's campaign they faded a little and are currently mid table in the Premier League. Recently they lost 2-0 to Blackcastle and they rated this performance as their worst display to date this year. They have never progressed to the open draw of the FAI Junior Cup and this year they had a bye in round 1 before defeating Kilsheelan Utd 7-0 in round 2. They consider themselves underdogs going into Sunday's tie but are hopeful they can create a bit of a stir. To date Celtic have played 5 North Tipp teams in the FAI Junior Cup and have a 100% record. If the play to their potential they should make 6 out of 6 but their recent performance against Rock Rovers does give some grounds for concern.

TOPIC: B team hope to bounce back

Clonmel Celtic B went down 4-0 away to Galbally Utd in the first leg of the Shield last Sunday. The concession of 3 late goals makes a comeback unlikely in the second leg but this Sunday they have an important league game against Division 2 pacesetters Gooldscross. The youths have a vital relegation tie against Galbally Utd while our under 12's are away to Cashel.

TOPIC: Tough FAI Youth Cup challenge for youths

Clonmel Celtic youths entertain St Michaels in round 2 of the FAI Youth Cup this Saturday. Celtic, despite home advantage , will be underdogs going into this game as St Michaels look a very useful outfit. The sides met earlier this season with St Michaels winning 3-2 in a league game. Since then St Michaels seem to have got stronger as evidenced with their impressive 3-2 win away to Clonmel Town in the Munster Youths Cup. Hopefully the lads can rise to the challenge and get a result which would really kick start their season. The B team have a big game this weekend as they play Galbally Utd in the first leg semi final of the Shield. The lads have shown some improvement of late and they will need to take a lead to Limerick for the second leg. They recently drew 3-3 with Galbally Utd and they should be good enough to get a result on Sunday. Our under 15's will need to beat Mullinahone at home on Sunday to revive their challenge for the league title after losing their last game to Clonmel Town and finally our under 11's kick off their season away to Clerihan.

TOPIC: Things can only get better

At this early stage of the season our junior and youth teams are already anxiously looking over their shoulders. Our A should be strong enough to pull away from trouble but they do need to start picking up points soon. Things are looking a little bleaker for our youth team. Even at this early stage it looks if they will be battling it out with Rock Rovers and Galbally Utd to avoid relegation. On a brighter note the B team have being showing recent signs of improvement. Their victory over Commons last Sunday lifted them out of the relegation zone for the first time this season. However with the teams around them having games in hand they still have a bit of work to do. Our under 12's have also had a poor start to the season but two goals from Ross Condon saw them pick up their first point of the season as they drew 2-2 with Mullinahone last Saturday.

TOPIC: Jekyll and Hide Performance

Manager Willie Murphy was left perplexed by his side's performance against Rock Rovers last Sunday. He said the first half display, which had Celtic in a 2-0 half time lead, was as good as he has seen this season. However he was shocked by the dismal performance in the second half which saw a usually organised Celtic fall asunder and concede three goals to lose 3-2. The result leaves Celtic just three points clear of the bottom side and what is a worrying is that two of the sides behind us have games in hand (see table section of website). It is vital now that the club picks up safety points as soon as possible. The last thing we need is to go into the latter stages of the season still in need of points to avoid a relegation fight. The later we leave it the harder it becomes as every game will be like a cup final with sides scrapping for points.

TOPIC: Youths in local derby

The youths travel to the Complex this weekend to face Clonmel Town. The lads will be underdogs going into this game as they still await their first points of the season but form tends to go out the window with local clashes so lets hope we can get our season up and running at youth level. On Sunday the juniors resume league action when they travel to Carrick to take on bottom club Rock Rovers. This will be a tough encounter as Rovers will be desperate for points. For our lads it is important to keep the good run going as this will be our last outing before our cup game against Cormackstown. The B team's recent improvement in form will be put to the test this Sunday when they take on Lattin Cullen who will be defending a 100% record. Finally our under 12's have had a very difficult start to the season and they will be hoping for their first points when they travel to Mullinahone on Saturday morning.

TOPIC: Referee Rescinds Yellow Card

Celtic B player Jason Gartland got a reprieve last Sunday when the referee, following representations at half time, rescinded the yellow card he had given the player during the first half. In my opinion it was a very petty yellow card but the referee must be commended for reconsidering his decision and then withdrawing the card. During the first half the ball went out of play near the Celtic dug out. Jason left the pitch to retrieve the ball to take the throw in. While someone else looked for the ball in the long grass behind the dug out Jason reached down, picked up a bottle of water and took a drink. The referee marched over and flashed a yellow card. On asking the referee at half time what the card was for he replied 'a player cannot leave the pitch and approach the technical area without his permission'. When I pointed out that the player in question actually left the pitch to take a throw in and was just waiting for the ball to be retrieved he said he did not see it that way. I asked him would he reconsider his decision and in fairness to him he did so. If there is a lesson to be learned here it is that referees are generally fair and if you have a grievance approach them in a courteous, diplomatic manner and they will listen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TOPIC: Cup Draws

Clonmel Celtic are getting to know a lot about North Tipperary soccer in this year's FAI Junior Cup as Round 3 sees them take on opposition from the North Tipp league for the third time. Having already accounted for Newtown Celtic and Blackcastle Utd, Celtic now see themselves pitched against Cormackstown who are currently flying high at the top of the Premier League in North Tipperary. The tie is scheduled to take place on November 7th in Clonmel. In the Munster Junior Cup Celtic have been drawn against Vee Rovers in the second round.

TOPIC: Upcoming Fixtures

Finally just news on the Munster and FAI Junior Cup draws. In Munster we will play Vee Rovers in Round 2 while on 7th November we entertain current North Tipp Premier League leaders Cormackstown in the third round of the FAI Junior cup.

TOPIC: Blackcastle Utd, Can we beat them?

Blackcastle United are a premier team from the North Tipperary league and they play their games on the Roscrea Rd in Templemore. They are currently about mid table in the Premier league which represents an improvement on last year. Their main problem this year has been inconsistency. They have beaten league leaders Nenagh Celtic but followed this up with a defeat against the bottom club. The availability of their Dublin based players is a crucial factor for the club and there is a possibility that some may be missing this weekend as they are travelling to Paris for the international. In recent years they have not advanced to the open stages of the FAI Cup, last year losing to Rosegreen Rangers on penalties and the year before they were well beaten by Waterford Bohemians. However they did reach the quarter finals of the Munster Junior Cup a couple of years ago before losing to College Corinithians of Cork. At their best they will definitely be tough opponents but despite having to travel, Celtic on recent form, should be good enough to advance.
