Not too bad a return
Clonmel Celtic have ended the season with three trophies. Although it has been a disappointing season at junior level the future looks bright with the youths winning the division 2 league and cup and the under 16s winning the league. Lets hope we can hold onto these players coming through. The committee has made great strides at developing the club in the last couple of years with the construction of new dressing rooms and plans for an all weather pitch. The future does look bright indeed.

Champions
Clonmel Celtic were crowned under 16 league champions following a stunning 5-2 win over Clonmel Town at a sun drenched Celtic Park last Friday night. Celtic entered this league play off as slight underdogs having twice lost to Town this season. However they graced the occasion with a tremendous performance and some quality finishing. Despite looking that bit sharper early on Celtic fell behind on 14 minutes when they failed to cope with a high ball down the middle and the Town striker was given far too much space to slide the ball under Keith Landers to give Town the lead. Celtic hit a purple patch twenty minutes before the break as they found the net four times to leave Town shell shocked at half time. On 24 minutes Glen Nugent fired home a super free kick to the bottom corner for Celtic's equaliser. Five minutes later Celtic were ahead when Kevin McGrath powered home a header from a Jason Barnes corner. Things got even better five minutes later when following good work in the box by Emmet Johnson, Jamie Goodwin glided a beauty into the net for Celtic's third. Could things get any better? Yes they could as a minute later David McGrath struck a beautiful half volley from the edge of the box that went in off the under side of the bar. Four top drawer goals had Celtic 4-1 up at the break. Town simply had no answer. Celtic continued to press home their advantage in the second half as the Town keeper saved well from Emmet Johnson. Town did come more into the game but when they did breakthrough they found Celtic keeper, Keith Landers in fine form. Some of his saves in the second half equalled the quality of Celtic's goals in the first half. Celtic wrapped things up on 62 minutes when a Jason Barnes's free kick totally deceived the Town keeper and ended up in the net for Celtic's fifth. Town did score a late consolation but there was no mistaking who were the under 16 champions following this emphatic victory by Clonmel Celtic. Congratulations to Michael Kiely and Willie Burke and all the players for what has been a fantastic season for the under 16s. They may have had to wait until their final game to claim a bit of silverware but it was well worth the wait. With the youths also dominant this season the future looks bright for Clonmel Celtic.

Stiff Town test for Celtic
Clonmel Celtic under 16s go in search of the league title this Friday night
when they entertain Clonmel Town at 7pm at the Bypass. This is effectively a
league final as the winners will be crowned 16 league champions. Celtic will
go into this game as underdogs as they have already lost twice to Town this
year. However both games were very competitive and close so Celtic will be
quietly confident that they can spring a surprise. Celtic have had a decent
enough season so it would be perfect if they could end the season with a
trophy. Everyone at Celtic would like to wish Michael Kiely and his team the
best of luck and hopefully you can come out on a fine summer's evening and
support the lads.

Player of the Year
It didn't really come as a surprise when Jamie Kelly of Clonmel Celtic was
named Division 2 Youth Player of the Year at the TSDL annual awards in Cahir
House last Friday night. The lad has had an amazing season scoring a record
46 goals in the youth league. It is hard to imagine this record being beaten
for a long long time. Of course Jamie's goal scoring exploits were assisted
by a Clonmel Celtic team that rang away with the Division 2 title. To the
detractors who say this was only division 2 football they should note that
Jamie also scored 13 goals at junior level with Clonmel Celtic B. A season
for young Jamie to look back on with pride. Congratulations from everyone at
Clonmel Celtic.

youths and 12 for the Junior B team. Everyone at the club wishes Jamie the
best of luck when the awards are announced at the annual TSDL end of season
function in Cahir House next Saturday.

Youths collect cup
Clonmel Celtic youths collected the Division 2 league trophy from league treasurer Richie Power after a forgettable 1-1 draw at home to Borris. This result meant that Celtic dropped their first points of the season in their very last game. Jamie Kelly scored for Celtic after Borris had taken the lead. However it has been a tremendous season for the youths so they can be forgiven for this minor discretion.

Hail, Hail the Celts
Clonmel Celtic youths completed the double of league and Division 2 Cup with
an emphatic 5-1 win over Two Mile Borris in Bansha on Easter Monday. Celtic
were strong favourites going into this tie but were stunned in the first
minute when Borris took a shock lead. However Celtic's response was instant
with Jamie Kelly netting twice, his second a fine lob after good work by his
strike partner Lyden Hughes. Celtic were 2-1 up after 15 minutes and took
command of the game. Although Borris battled gamely they were never really a
match for Celtic and the game was a fairly drab affair. You always got the
impression that Celtic were never really firing on all cylinders and if
required, they could raise their game at any stage. They missed numerous
opportunities to put the game beyond doubt before the break. Just after half
time they sealed the game when Lyden Hughes finished off a good move. On 52
minutes captain, Kenneth Brannigan headed home a fourth from a corner kick.
All that was left was for David Joyce to finish well on 65 minutes to make
it 5-1 and clinch the Division 2 Cup for Celtic. The squad were deserving of
this latest success as they have been excellent all season and have been
admirably managed and coached by David Peters and Jockie Landers.
Congratulations to all concerned.

Missed chances prove costly
Hopes for silverware for the B team were dashed on Easter Sunday as goals in

Big weekend for Celtic
Clonmel Celtic go in search of two trophies this weekend as the youths and B
team contest finals. The Division 2 Shield is on Sunday and it should be a
very tight affair against Killenaule Rovers. Celtic have played Rovers three
times this season, with one win, one defeat and one draw (Killenaule winning
on penalties), so it couldn't be more even. After relegation Killenaule will
be all out to claim something from this season but I fancy Celtic to sneak
it in a very close affair. The youths have proved they are by far the best
team in Division 2 and they should be too strong for Borris on Easter Monday
and should add the Division 2 Cup to their league title. Best of luck to
both teams.

Clonmel Celtic youths remain on course to finish the season with a 100%

Jamie Kelly and Lydon Hughes and another goal by David Joyce saw Celtic
cruise to a 5-1 win.

Easter Mayhem
Has the league secretary lost the plot completely. If you saw the youth and
B teams' Easter schedule you would have to think so. Potentially the likes
of Johnny Cagney and Jamie Kelly (any player who plays both with the youths
and B team) will have a game every day over Easter. Yes fours games in
consecutive days. The B team have a league game on Friday and the Shield
Final on Sunday while the youths have a league game on Saturday with the
Division 2 Cup Final on Monday. What a joke. The league is belittling their
own Cup and Shield Finals by fixing league games for two days beforehand.
The league is also showing a total ignorance when it comes to the purpose of
B teams. Surely it should know by now that one of the objectives of a B team
is to introduce youth players to junior football so it should know that a
lot of youth players are involved with B teams. Obviously they don't or they
wouldn't create a schedule where some players are expected to play on four
consecutive days over the Easter 'break'.

Clonmel Celtic youths remain on target to finish the season with a 100%

goals. He already has 40 goals but ten more goals might be just beyond his
reach. Whatever he ends up with he has had a remarkable season.

16s out of cup
Another team who have been impressive this season are the under 16s but they have still a lot of hard work to do to claim any silverware after they were beaten 2-1 by Clonmel Town in the Tipperary Cup last Sunday. With the wind at their backs Town scored from 2 set pieces to lead 2-0 at the break. Celtic came strongly back into the game in the second half with Jason Barnes and Jamie Goodwin both hitting the woodwork. Emmet Johnson did hit the target but unfortunately Celtic couldn't find an equaliser. Jason Barnes and Kevin McGrath were best for Celtic on the day.

We can now confirm that Clonmel Celtic are officially Division 2 Champions.
The recent confusion was caused by an error on the TSDL's Website which

before Celtic had a chance to play another game Borris lost their latest
league encounter which handed the title to Celtic. Once again
congratulations to everyone involved in this great achievement. Celtic
travel to Thurles this Saturday to play Peake Villa in a league tie. Lets

It wasn't a good weekend at junior level with both the A team and B team losing. The B team went down 4-1 to the Old Bridge in the Tipperary Cup with Jamie Kelly scoring a late consolation. There was however some good news for the B team later in the day. Killenaule Rovers defeat to Glengoole guarantees the B team's place in Division 2 next season. Cup Action
The youths will attempt to reach the Division 2 Cup Final this weekend when they host Killenaule Rovers. Celtic will be very strong favourites to advance and meet Borris in the final. They have already beaten Rovers twice this season, 9-1 victors the last time they met. The B team will attempt to do what the A team couldn't i.e. knock the Old Bridge out of the cup. The B team will be hoping to create a surprise but on recent form Bridge will start warm favourites. The A team play their final league game of the season when they travel to Carrick to play Rock Rovers. This is a huge game for Rovers with victory essential to have a chance of staying up. Although safe, this is also an important game for Celtic. By avoiding defeat they will improve on their final position last season. Also given their very poor record against Rovers it would also probably suit us better to see the Carrick side relegated!

B team in trouble
After last Sunday's 4-2 defeat away to Rock Rovers the B team find themselves in a similar situation to that they were in last season. From challenging for promotion this loss leaves Celtic in relegation trouble. They fought hard last Sunday but it always seemed an uphill battle. Rovers were 1-0 at half time and added a second on 56 minutes. David Allen from the penalty spot pulled one back for Celtic but Rovers restored their 2 goal advantage on 70 minutes. A minute later it was 4-1 and victory was assured for the Carrick side. Celtic kept battling away and Jockie Landers scored a consolation goal in the last minute. For Celtic Mick Kennedy put in a bit effort while Stephen Landy put himself about. Brian Landers was also impressive as was David Allen.

Waterford Crystal 2 Clonmel Celtic 2 (Crystal win on pens)
When the opposition manager admits that the best team lost it makes it that bit harder to accept defeat but Celtic Under 16s were cruelly robbed of a place in the last eight of the Barry Cup by a goal scored with four minutes of extra time remaining. Celtic nearly made the perfect start to this game with Emmet Johnson coming close after only two minutes. There were not too many chances created in the first half although the Crystal keeper did tip a Glen Nugent effort onto the crossbar. On 55 minutes Celtic went behind with a ball played over the top. However a minute later they were level when after good work by Paul Landers, Emmet Johnson collected Glen Nugent's pass, turned smartly and fired home an equaliser. The game finished at 1-1 and went into extra time. Celtic looked to have
got the all important goal when Emmet Johnson was on the end of a Paul Landers ball to fire Celtic ahead. Unfortunately they couldn't hold out and conceded a sloppy goal with minutes remaining which brought the game to penalties and eventual heartache for Celtic. However already in the last eight of the Lyons Cup and still in contention for the league and cup this fine Celtic side still have alot to play for. Celtic Starman: Kevin McGrath

Clonmel Celtic are just one win away from the 18 points that kept them safe last year. Although it is not definite, 18 points should be enough to see us retain our Premier status. Remarkably victory on Sunday could see us actually jump to third position in the table. St Nicholas have had an excellent debut season and will represent a tough challenge on Sunday. People will remember Tommy Kiely's debut game was away to St Nicholas where Celtic threw away a three goal lead to lose 5-3. Celtic have been inconsistent of late but a repeat of the last Sunday's battling performance away to Peake Villa should see Celtic shade this game. Although promotion may have gone with last week's defeat to Killenaule the B team will be hoping to bounce back to winning ways away to Glengoole next Sunday. With a lot of important cup games coming up, including a Shield final, Celtic will be hoping to put a good run of results together to boost confidence. At this stage it appears the youths can only throw away the Division 2 title but
they have a tricky one away to Borris on Saturday.

Clonmel Celtic travel to Thurles on Sunday for a very important clash with Peake Villa. You could say that the losers on Sunday will fight it out with Rock Rovers to

However Celtic were very poor against Rock Rovers last Sunday and will need a huge improvement to get something out of this game. Clonmel Celtic youths are looking good for silverware this year. They are now odds on favourites to clinch the second division and they are in the semi final of the Division 2 Cup. Saturday sees them travel to Cashel to play in the second round of the Tipperary Cup. Cashel are arguably the best team in Tipperary at the moment so this game should give us some idea of the gap in quality between the first and second division. Classy B team advance
The B team's fantastic season continues with a classy 4-1 win away to first division side Vee Rovers which puts them into the 3rd round of the Paddy Purtill Cup. This was a victory achieved without a few regulars which makes it all the more impressive. Celtic hit the front on 37 minutes with a brilliantly executed goal which was finished with aplomb by Jamie Kelly. On 45 minutes Jamie took his season tally into double figures for the B team as his strike had Celtic cruising 2-0 at the
break. Rovers reorganised at the break and carried more of a threat in the
second half but Celtic sealed victory on 55 minutes when Jockie Landers
converted a penalty after Jamie Kelly was fouled in the box. Rovers scored
a dubiously awarded penalty on 72 minutes but substitute Martin Monaghan
sealed the win with a fourth on 82 minutes. Martin had to work very hard
for his goal but by all accounts he will need to work a bit harder on his
goal celebration which left a lot to be desired!. So the B team's fine
season continues which is a credit to Billy Landers and his team. Already
in the Shield final and in the promotion shake up they now advance to
round 3 of the Paddy Purtill Cup.

reacted quickest when a Glen Nugent shot came back off the post. However
the Cavan side were level on 10 minutes. Celtic were finding it hard to
play their normal game as their robust opponents were competing well and
making life very difficult. Celtic regained the lead on 25 minutes when
Gary Doyle cut in form the left to fire home a fine effort. Back came
Harps to equalise again to leave the score 2-2 at the break. On 50 minutes
Celtic hit the front for the 3rd time when Emmet Johnson showed some fine
close control in the box as he slid the ball under the keeper. David
McGrath then made the game safe for Celtic with a fine free kick which put
Celtic into the last 16 where they will probably be away to Wateford
Crystal. The team and management would like to thank the youth players who
travelled on Saturday and they also appreciate the efforts of Mary Mullins
who drove the long distance north to support the lads.

Clonmel Celtic face a huge game this Sunday as they entertain Rock Rovers. Victory here would go a long way to keeping us safe in the Premier Division. Although we haven't played in a while we were showing signs of some form before Christmas. However what is very worrying and is cause for concern on Sunday is our record against Rock Rovers. The youths play in the second round of the Tipperary Cup away to Cashel Town. Cashel are arguably the best youth team in Tipperary at the moment and have already beaten Celtic 3-0 in the Munster Youths Cup. This will be a very interesting challenge for the youths and may give some indication of the gap in quality between the Youth Premier league and the 2nd division.

B team stay in touch
The B team kept up their promotion challenge with a 1-0 victory over
basement club the Commons last Sunday. This was one of the few games that
survived the hard overnight frost and the tricky underfoot produced a poor
quality first half. On 16 minutes a good move down Celtic's left saw John
Paul Byrne come close to scoring from a Mick Kennedy cross. Commons then had
their best period of the game and only for Davy Power in Celtic's goal they
could have had an interval lead although Jockie Landers did come close with
a header for Celtic just before the break. Celtic upped the tempo on the
restart and took the lead on 47 minutes Johnny Cagney scored a free kick
after he, himself had been fouled. The goal breathed renewed confidence into
Celtic as they went on to dominate the game playing some great football in
the process. Last ditch tackling denied Wayne Gartland and debutant Martin
Monaghan a second goal for Celtic. David Allen and Jimmy Slater were rock
solid for Celtic in defence while Jockie Landers and John Paul Byrne also
impressed.

Villa test for Celtic
Clonmel Celtic travel to Thurles on Sunday morning for a very important
clash with Peake Villa. Both teams are currently tied on 12 points and you
could say that the losers on Sunday will fight it out with Rock Rovers to
avoid joining Killusty in the First Division next season. Celtic's form
against Peake Villa is quite good having won their last three encounters
with the Thurles outfit. However the fact that Celtic haven't played since
Christmas is a worry. Clonmel Celtic youths are looking good for silverware
this year. They are now odds on favourites to clinch the second division and
they are in the semi final of the Division 2 Cup. Saturday sees them kick
off their challenge for what will be the hardest trophy to claim i.e. the
Tipperary Youth Cup. Although they should be too good for Killeanaule they
will at some stage have to overcome the first division big guns to claim
this cup. The B team are at home to bottom club the Commons and need to
claim all three points to keep up their challenge for promotion.

The B team moved right back into promotion contention with an excellent 2-1

an excellent move culminated in Jamie Kelly finding the net. However
Moyglass struck back a minute later to leave the score 2-1 at the break.
Celtic had to work hard to maintain their lead in the second half with David
Allen and Jimmy Slater putting in great performances in defence. Behind them
Davy Power was in inspirational form in goal saving Celtic on a number of
occasions. It was by no means all one way traffic in the second period as

Clonmel Celtic claimed their first victory of the season with a 4-2 win over Peake Villa last Sunday. Hero of the day was Mark Maguire who scored two and was also involved in the other two goals. Although relieved at the win you sense things are not quite right in the Celtic camp yet. Paul Kennedy scored his first goal for the club and Eddie Doyle netted from the penalty spot. The B team had to rely on a last minute penalty to earn a 3-3 draw away to Glen Villa in their irst league game. Celtic lead 2-0 midway through the first half with an o.g and another goal from Wayne Kiely.

Celtic's unwanted record.
Celtic's current run of six games without a win, stretching back to last season, is their worst run in their short history. This Sunday they will try to put things right with a game against Peake Villa. Indeed Celtic's last win was against Villa in a game last season that guaranteed them Premier football. A victory on Sunday could be just as important. The B team kick off their league campaign with a tough game away to Glen Villa. Meanwhile the youths will try and continue their fine start to the season when they entertain Moyglass Utd.

Big derby test for Celtic
Celtic go into Sunday's derby with Town badly in need of points to kick start their season. To be honest our record against Town is brutal with failure to win in five attempts (4 defeats ,1 draw). We have yet even to score against Town. Sunday would be the ideal time to put this right.

Celtic still await first win
A late goal from Eddie Doyle earned Clonmel Celtic a point in a 3-3 draw away to newly promoted Bansha Celtic last Sunday. Two goals from Paddy O'Donnell had Celtic 2-1 up at the break but in the end they had to settle or a point. One point from six does not represent a good start to the season and that first win cannot come soon enough. (Match Report will appear in Reports Section.)
